Who is this guy, anyway?

For over twenty-five years, Mark Phoenix has worked on all sides of the microphone. Starting from the literal floor of a studio untangling cables, Mark found his way to Windsor’s community cable station, where he cut his teeth on working sound and graphics for live broadcasts. From there, he attended Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) earning a degree in Radio and Television Arts while focusing on radio and sound.

Mark volunteered at campus and community radio stations, producing spots for
CJAM-FM in Windsor, and hosting news programming for CKLN-FM in Toronto, where he later became production coordinator. There, he produced spots and segments for broadcast, trained volunteers on equipment and techniques, and ran live studio and remote broadcasts.

His next career leap came about when he volunteered for what was then known as VoicePrint, part of the former National Broadcast Reading Service, voicing local news articles for broadcast and streaming. This opened the way to becoming a sound mixer with NBRS’s successor,
Accessible Media Inc. There, he helped shape the sound of described video in Canada, recording and mixing narration for hundreds of titles while conducting post-production mixes on original AMI programs. He participated in the CRTC’s DV Best Practices Working Group, composing the technical standards for mixing and broadcast. Later in his tenure at AMI, he began writing and narrating description for movie trailers and spots. As a partially-sighted person himself, Mark has a strong personal interest in ensuring accessible media is entertaining media in its own right.

As his time at AMI came to a close, a door to new opportunities opened. Phoenix Soundworks is the culmination of over two decades of experience and effort on the frontlines of broadcasting and production, where Mark can make sound his way. Let Mark put his ears and experience to work on your productions, and hear the Phoenix Soundworks difference.
